Everything You Need to Know About the IELTS Test
The IELTS test is one of the most widely recognised English language tests in the world. It is designed to assess your level of English proficiency and accurately determine candidates’ abilities by testing the four key communication skills. The test is developed by experts according to specific international standards.
What Is the IELTS Test and What Is It Used For?
IELTS is an international test used to measure English language proficiency. It is required by many universities and educational institutions around the world and is also used for certain employment and immigration procedures.
If you are planning to study in the UK or another English-speaking country, you may need to provide an IELTS certificate to demonstrate your level of English.
Types of IELTS Tests
There are two main types of IELTS tests:
IELTS Academic
This test is mainly intended for students who wish to study at universities or other educational institutions, particularly at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
IELTS General Training
This test is generally used for work, immigration and training purposes, depending on the requirements of the organisation or country you are applying to.
Therefore, before registering for the test, make sure you know which type is required.
Sections of the IELTS Test
The test consists of four main sections:
- Reading
Test duration: 60 minutes.
You will answer 40 questions based on a range of texts. The nature of the texts and questions varies depending on whether you take the Academic or General Training test.
This section assesses your ability to understand texts and identify information and main ideas.
- Writing
Test duration: 60 minutes.
It consists of two tasks:
- Task 1: You are required to write at least 150 words. The nature of the task varies depending on the type of test. In IELTS Academic, you may be asked to describe a graph, table or diagram, while the task is different in IELTS General Training.
- Task 2: You are required to write an essay on a particular topic, with a minimum of 250 words.
Your writing is assessed according to several criteria, including the organisation of ideas, vocabulary, grammar and how well you address the requirements of the question.
- Listening
The test lasts approximately 30 minutes.
You will listen to a series of recordings featuring different conversations or situations and then answer 40 questions based on what you hear.
This section assesses your ability to understand spoken English and identify important information and details.
- Speaking
The test usually lasts between 11 and 14 minutes.
It is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, during which you will discuss a range of topics. Your ability to communicate in English is assessed, including your fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
IELTS Scores
The IELTS test is scored on a scale from 0 to 9, known as Band Scores.
- Band 9: Expert user
- Band 8: Very good user
- Band 7: Good user
- Band 6: Competent user
- Band 5: Modest user
There is no single universal pass or fail score for IELTS. The score you need depends on the university, scholarship or institution you are applying to.
Some universities may require a score of 6.0, while other universities or programmes may require 6.5, 7.0 or higher.
When it comes to scholarships, language requirements vary from one scholarship to another, so it is always important to check the requirements of both the scholarship and the university before applying.
Does an IELTS Certificate Have an Expiry Date?
An IELTS result is generally considered valid for two years from the date of the test, but whether the certificate is accepted ultimately depends on the organisation you are submitting it to.
Therefore, if you are planning to study abroad, do not take the test at random or too far in advance of your application deadline.
It is better to plan your test date according to university or scholarship application deadlines and the requirements for securing admission.
Is IELTS Difficult?
The level of difficulty depends largely on your current level of English and how well prepared you are for the test.
You may have a good level of English, but you still need to practise the question formats and develop your time-management skills.
Therefore, good preparation does not only mean improving your English. It also means understanding the nature of each section, practising with sample tests and learning how to manage your time effectively.
